Life Insurance

Life insurance replaces income and pays bills when someone is gone, so the people who depend on you are not left with debts or hard choices. The right policy depends on how long you need coverage, your budget and whether you want the policy to build cash value.

Your options

What each option does, in plain English

Term life

Coverage for a set number of years (often 10, 20 or 30). Usually the lowest cost per dollar of coverage. If the term ends and you are still living, coverage stops unless you renew or convert it.

Often a fit for: Covering a mortgage, young children or working years at the lowest cost.

Whole life

Permanent coverage with level premiums and a cash value that grows at a rate set by the policy. Costs more than term for the same death benefit.

Often a fit for: Lifelong coverage, final expenses and leaving a legacy.

Universal life & indexed universal life (IUL)

Permanent coverage with more flexible premiums. An IUL credits interest based partly on a market index, with a floor and a cap set by the carrier; it is not invested in the market directly. Policy charges, caps and how you fund it all affect results, and underfunded policies can lapse.

Often a fit for: People who want permanent coverage and flexibility, and are prepared to review the policy regularly.

Living benefits

Riders on many policies that may let you access part of the death benefit early if you are diagnosed with a qualifying chronic, critical or terminal illness. Terms, triggers and costs vary by carrier and state.

Often a fit for: Anyone who wants a policy that can help during a serious illness, not only after death.

Who it is for

  • Parents and anyone with people who rely on their income
  • Homeowners who want the mortgage covered
  • Business owners and partners
  • Retirees planning final expenses or a legacy

Good to know before you buy

  • Approval, rates and coverage depend on underwriting (health, age, lifestyle) and are set by the insurer.
  • Cash value growth in permanent policies is not guaranteed unless the policy states it, and loans or withdrawals reduce the death benefit.
  • Replacing an existing policy is not always in your interest; we will compare both side by side before you decide.
